I've just got an all singing, all dancing coffee machine from the states, after using the same model over in Canada. The bastard thing won't work and just blows the fuse. Looking into it, it appears that it may be a wiring issue (US is set up for 120V, whereas we are 240V).

My question is, can it be rewired, or is there another way to get the bastard thing working? It's cost me a fair few quid, so it'll be annoying if it's useless.

What about something like this?

Step down converter will solve the voltage issue, but it won't change the frequency

US is 60hz and GB is 50 hz.

This may give issues with timers and ac motors (for pumps etc)
if the pump motors are ac, they will run at 5/6th the speed in GB - doesn't sound much, but it can cause loss of torque.
You may still be alright

If it uses dc motors, you should be fine

(US is set up for 120V, whereas we are 240V).

Technically it's 230v.

US is also 60Hz as opposed to UK 50Hz, so if your fancy coffee machine has a motor in it, it might not run to the correct speed (or at all, depending on the motor).

Or a good old fashioned Italian stovetop

Who invented / discovered electricity anyway? Shouldn't we just use their system to make things simple instead of changing everything.

That's a bit like asking "who discovered steam". There is no single person that takes the credit as we've known it's been around us for a long, long time. Although different people such as Franklin and Faraday helped expand our knowledge and find practical uses for it.

If there is one man in history who epitomised the selfish twat it's Edison. Willingly put back the advance of progress to make some cash and promote himself. Fuck Edison. Fuck his moudly old corpse.

Didn't he promote 110v DC because anything more than that would blow the filament in his light bulbs?
