I'm pretty neolithic regarding my phone - just calls and texts. No camera, no internet.

Mrs Audrey has upgraded her phone and says I can have her old i-Phone 4.

Got a new sim from Giff Gaff - only £5 a month! - but it seems I have to unlock it from her provider.

Is there a simple way of doing this or is it a load of techie bollocks?

Lots of stalls in town offer phone unlocking, don't understand it personally as never had to have it done, but I think you can just get it done in town on the cheapo.

Some Asian fella in the Outlet does it, but he wanted £30 and it'd take 4 days!

He can fuck off. I'd rather keep my old phone.

Just having it done for my eldest.  Seems very simple.  The cost is dependant on the network it was locked to.  EE / Orange are the most expensive.  £40 to unlock an Iphone 4 from Orange in the dodgy place in emery gate in chippenham.  Probably cheaper elsewhere but I dont understand it so just said yes.

I was certain you can do this for next to nothing/free just by doing it yourself/through a network you want to switch to. Its only your PUK and IMEI needed I think.

Depends on the network it's on and how long you've been with them.

I got my iPhone 5S unlocked for free by o2 when I went to america. Check the networks website as most offer doing it for free now I think.

Just contact the network it's on and they unlock it free most of the time. Vodafone have an online thing, then you get an email, plug it in to iTunes and it's sorted. Done it with 2 phones, quite painless.
