Chattanooga Tennessee? How random. I went there once, stayed at the Holiday Inn Chattanooga Choo Choo which is the old railroad station. Some of the rooms are converted railway carriages. Nice place from what I can remember (it was a few years ago), no similarities with Swindon whatsoever as far as I could tell you.

It is also twinned with a place called Ocotal which i think is in Central America or south America, never heard of it being twinned with Chattanooga! |

The Ocotal twinning was an early 80's thing achieved by the then Labour run SBC.....Nicaragua, had democratically elected the left wing Sandinista government, much the same way as had happened in Chile with the Allende government. Uncle Sam wasn't having any of this democracy lark, and organised a covert campaign to destroy the Sandinistas. Happily, for the people of Nicaragua, the Contra campaign failed, and Daniel Ortega is now back as El Presidente, after years, in democratically decided, opposition. Tories are definitely more Disney World, than Sandinista....

The Disney link up was for a year in 2013 I think, so no longer twinned. It was from a local resident entering us into a competition and resulted in a plaque in Epcot being erected for that calendar year. Chattanooga is a Sister City relationship, there was something in the Adver about it not too long ago due to a tree being there or something like that, as a present from us. Linkage was due to the trains.

Salzgitter, was pretty much on the Cold War frontier....the Iron Curtain just a few kilometres away, I'm sure the burghers of the town, slept more soundly in their beds, knowing that Swindon would have come to their aid had the Red Army rolled. |
