Class B1 4-6-0.....built in Glasgow by North British Loco Company. These were starting to be churned out by the LNER in 1942, and you can see it has something of the lines of an austerity loco....so fitting for the present times.
Apparently, their rolling out coincided with a visit from Jan Smuts....Saffa politico, so they got named after Saffa wildlife etc.
One was called Bongo....so the name attached to the class.....wouldn't do in these politically correct times
O.S. Nock doyen of railway writers, reckoned the B1 gave a rather unsteady ride....not a patch on a Swindon built GWR Hall class
