Unfortunately...the policies of government, make it almost inevitable that participation in grass roots sport will continue to dwindle.  Just look at all the sports facilities that Swindon had in 60's 70's that have been lost to housing etc...eg Wills Ground, BR Ground, STFC A Ground, Drakes Way   Various school fields, which could be hired by the community also gone eg. old Richard Jeffries School, Park School,....don't think you can play football on Lydiard any longer, and cricket at Shrewsbury Road...gone.

Presently SBC, are accelerating the process, by looking to flog off Lydiard and the Croft, Broome Manor Golf Course and anything else which isn't bolted down...it's a great deal try and run them at a profit, and if that doesn't work, apply for change of use and Mr Pickles will nod through a housing estate complete with supermarket.

Flattering picture, isn't it? Probably an accurate representation, though.

Crying shame as it is and more so when some of the borough facilities either make money or have next to a zero council subsidy to run.

A good piece, and it does take ccommitted individuals to keep things going.  Unfortunately Reg is right, so many sports facilities and open spaces are being lost - and often it isn't the local authority's fault, but the fault of central government who offer great incentives to offer up playing fields for housing estates, and have forced local authorities in to such a financial black hole that they have no choice but to sell off playing fields.  It may not be true in absolutely every case, but most local authorities do not want to sell off playing fields - or close libraries or community centres for that matter - but faced with a choice between that and huge cuts to children's services and adult social care, the playing fields go.

I think that they should be housed on the playing fields in tents.
