The Opponent: Wolverhampton Wanderers

Its rare I am glad that I had to miss a game but going by some of the imminent forecasts of doom from some on here and plenty elsewhere it sounds like Saturday’s game was the right one to miss. There won’t be any stopping me tonight though, the last job is booked in for 4pm in Penhill so I reckon its game on. I would imagine a decent sized crowd tonight, mainly thanks to the hordes that are likely to make it down from The Black Country. Did you know the surrounding area near Wolverhampton became known as the Black Country when, during heavy industrialisation of the area in the late 19th century, pollution covered the area in black soot and left the soil black! Will our lot have the testies to raise themselves for a big game like this? Do they think they have much to play for? Only time will tell I guess.

Wolves had sold 1746 tickets in advance of the game and with pay on the day also an option some of their fans may well make it a last minute thing and make it nearer 2000 in hope of seeing their team go for a record 9 consecutive wins. I remember the away trip to Wolves earlier in the season, we played them off the park for large spells of the game with some of the early season entertaining brand of football we were witnessing causing them all sorts of problems, the only thing missing from a good day out was a deserved 3 points, instead we had to settle for none. Let’s be honest, Wolves are firing on all cylinders and if you was asked at the start of the season who you fancied to go up this year then not many of us would have left them out of the mix but the alarming thing is anything less than a resounding victory will not be enough for some. If the players can show some determination and some effort then let that be enough for now, anyway, in the words of one TEF member, I’ve got a good feeling about this one.

Weather or not? – Finally a spell of more settled weather has plonked itself over our little island, variable cloud expected but remaining dry, temperatures should be sitting at around 8 degrees come kick off.

Where the opposition gather –

Devizes Wolves sounds like a nice guy (bottom link)

Last 6 – WWWWWW (Gulp, currently top of the league)

They have served us both – Jock Bell, Paul Ince, Joe Holyhead, Tim Flowers, Glenn Hoddle, Ernie Hunt, Arthur Hetherington, Miles Storey, Darren Ward, John Trollope, Ady Williams, Ted Batchelor, George Ndah, Ernie Jones, Roy Pritchard, Mike Collins, Mark Crook, Andy King, Andy Mutch, George Cryle, Peter Eastoe, Ken Keyworth, Bobby Woodruff, John Chadburn, Billy Rose, Jimmy Poppitt, Leon Clarke, Ted Vizard, Gerry Taylor, Paul Walker, Jimmy Lee, Frank Talia, John Skull, Mark Walters

The Odds – Swindon 3/1   Draw 5/2    Wolves 10/11  Aside from the Chelsea game this must be the longest odds we have had on us to win at home this season.

The Son Says – We sat down just before bedtime and watched the highlights from the game earlier in the season, by fuck was Ryan Mason’s goal an absolute blinder. He still has the belief and has gone for a 3-2 home win.

The Prediction – Not sure if anyone has ever noticed but I have never predicted a defeat, and tonight is no different. We will win this game 3-2 in front of 9’488 (2001 from Wolverhampton). The goal stampede will come care of a Smith double and a late late screamer from Pritchard.

And Finally – In their last 8 league games they have won all 8 matches, scoring 21 goals and conceding just 1 goal (to the slavetraders). I remain more convinced by the minute we will fuck their new club record that most of their fans seem to think they have already won.

I'm not sure it's fair to describe us as "a little island" after all GB is the 9th biggest island on the planet...Wolves in the early 50's were a sort of proto Manure....Billy Wright married Joy Beverley of the Beverley Sisters, the girl group of their day, they could attract big pay day European nights for friendlies, even though the FA and FL couldn't be doing with the johnny foreigner stuff of the European Cup.

It was left to the Sweaties to take the radical step of entering the European Cup, when Hibs did so, and England soon followed suit, Wolves had a couple of goes in it as Champions in the late 50's but were undone by Barca...

Based on recent home performances cannot argue with that, would love to see us come out and play like we did for the first 10 games of the season and give it a go - might surprise everyone!

2-0 Wolves...I cannot see us scoring and with our defence a pornstar has got more chance of a clean sheet than us at the moment.  No

Play off hopes totally ended tonight with a 3 or 4-1 hammering. Hope we then give Barthram,Branco and Storey a decent run, can't be any worse than what we've had recently

As long as we keep it somewhat competitive and don't get embarrassed I'll take it.

We need some element of confidence to take into Saturday.

Sort of game, and the type of team that we'd be up for normally. Unfortunately with us being light up front, we'll only win 2-1.
