Windows Vista - when I put in my password I get a message

'the user profile service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.'

Any idea what I should do  other than  Crash

I have disabled updates to stop this thing but may have slipped through via AVG

Cheers

Here is a guide, it says for Windows 7 but it is Vista as well.

The error happens often from anti virus software corrupting a file.

Start the PC in safe mode pressing F8. When it starts up, press the windows key and the R button - should bring up the run box. Type in regedit. Browse to HKLM/Software/Microsoft/windows nt/current version/profile list.

Delete all the profiles with the long numbers. There should be three with shorter numbers - do not delete those.

Restart your PC.

Get rid of Vista and install Windows 7

Thanks for the help - did not go totally to plan as AVG decided to play silly buggers and would not update or uninstall. Eventually decided to restore - which AVG did not like at all  Cheesy

Have this morning ordered an iMac - might as well have fun in my dotage  Roll Eyes

Thanks again for your help
