You can put dual operating systems on a mac, so you can run windows if needs be. If you know someone with an ac.uk address even better as they get educational discount.

Apple are rumoured to be announcing a 13" Macbook Pro with Retina Display tomorrow.

If so i'd be sorely tempted to upgrade, as mine is almost 3 years old and slowing down by the day.

Only a posing prick would require a new laptop every year though.

Everyone knows Macs are only good for posing though. Shiny, shiny.

Buy a cheap Windows laptop and you could buy 4 or 5 of them before spending the same as a mac Wink

Seeing as there was no sure fire winner in the poll i ended up going for a Sony Vaio E Series.
Was quite keep on an ultra book but opted against one as i couldn't find one i liked with a 15inch screen.

Cheers for your help

My Son is looking to buy a new laptop, and I have no clue as to what level we should be looking at.

He found this one on the Dell site, but I'm not sure whether its good or not.

I know we have some clever, technically literate, bods on here so any (sensible) advice would be much appreciated.

What is he intending to use it for? Might be wrong but the graphics card looks mid range so may not suffice as a games machine.

Like the SSD drive and processor though.

I'm sure Si Pie or JJ will be along to put me right if I'm wrong.

To be fair he doesn't use it a lot for gaming (he plays his xbox for that more).

He's just started his first year of 'A' levels and uses it for homework/research. He's not taking any kind of ICT or graphic design, so doesn't need anything top of the range graphics wise.

Entertainment wise, he does play football manager as well as playing music & messing about on youtube.

Should be fine I would say. Just make sure he stores all his stuff on the 500gb otherwise it will soon fill up

Comes with Windows 8, is he happy with that?

Football Manager is surprisingly demanding in terms of graphics.

Sounds a good spec, the graphics are pretty low end but if he only plays FM on the lowest graphics setting it will be fine.

Thanks for the info, based on the feedback it appears that the graphics might be an issue.

Just as a question, what would be a decent graphics card?

I play Medieval 2 Total War on my laptop on the top settings and it runs relatively smoothly. Would Empire Total War be a step too far?
