Compared these when I was looking for a laptop, i5 pisses all over nearly all of the AMD quads.

Asking which out of an AMD Quad Core and Intel i5 is better is a bit like asking which our of a BMW and Mercedes is faster. It depends on the model, what you need, how much you've got to spend and so on.

But having said that, I believe that Intel piss all over AMD nowadays on the desktop and to a lesser degree on laptops. Think AMD have got better built in graphics, especially on laptops. I may be talking crap though.

I know that the gap between amd and intel as been reduced. If I can afford it I tend to always go intel, but would be more than happy with an AMD.

It does depend on which exact processor you are looking at if say its a straight comparison of a AMD A6-3400M vs Core i5-2410M then its a win for the i5, if its a lesser AMD quad then its a much bigger win for the i5.

Benchmarks  AMD A6-3400M Core i5-2410M
PassMark the AMD is 5% faster
Super Pi2M the i5 is 10% faster
3D Mark06 the i5 is 45% faster
Windows 7 Experience the AMD is 6.6 the i5 is 6.9

i5 is far faster than any of the AMD quads and some of the AMD 6 + 8 cores in real world applications.

Unless you use highly multithreaded applications which most of us don't, but in day to day its no contest.

I've always used AMD chips and never had one fail on me.
