ello you lot, has anyone got a recommendation for a wheelbuilder around the Swindon area? I'm planning to get my Powertap built into a new set of rims

Not anyone specific but I'd try Mitchells

Fun fact: I used to build wheels. Even had a jig. Randomly built a 48 spoke BMX wheel about 7 years ago without a jig. Never again.

I'm off work this week and fancy riding to Cheltenham. Has anyone done it from swindon and what's the best route?

Whereabouts in Swindon?

I'm in OT and the route I'd use would be aiming to keep off main roads as far as possible, so Sustrans 45, out to Akers Way, then N Wilts canal towpath to Moulden Hill CP....through this near Blunsdon/Cricklade Railway to come out by The Pry on back road towards Cricklade, but turn off for Ashton Keynes at Chelworth. From Ashton Keynes head for Siddington as  way into Ciren. Ciren is a bit dodgy as housing estates and dual carriage ways alter the roads from a few years back when I was last there, but the White Way, an ancient saltway runs up more or less due north to Withington, then on towards Andoversford, cross the 436 then head for Whittington, which will drop you down into Cheltnum via Charlton Kings.

I'm in OT too. I'm relatively comfortable following the sustrans 45 from here (http://www.sustrans.org.uk/ncn/map/route/route-45) but was unsure after that though to Cheltenham, as I was thinking of going on the old Cheltenham road.

I've done it once or twice. THIS is the route I've taken. All relatively quiet roads, with perhaps the exception of the section by Dobbies in Ciren. Bit of a hill to get back out of Cheltenham on the way home.

Yep....that'll take you up to Ciren OK, basically the route I was describing, worth noting though, if you follow it fronm Akers Way, you have to enter the warren around Isambard, the Moulden Hill detour, is a bit off road, but...hey that's just me.

The curly wurly 345....probably not the worst A road, but I'd rather the extra Kms and time.

I used to go with my bike often to Cheltnum.....on the train  Smiley

I've just mapped both routes, and there is only a mile difference. I think for the quieter road, and for the sake of an extra mile, I'll avoid the old Cheltenham road.

Nah, way too risky.  Spokes on a wheel a bit like a bacon slicer.
