DVD to iPad

Anyone recommend any software that's good (and free) to convert DVDs to mp4s so I can watch films on my iPad without giving Apple any more of my dwindling monies?
Many thanks in advance.

I use Handbrake a lot. Never ripped a dvd with it though, find it quicker to download a torrent then convert to iPad. Never had any problems with quality either, even lower quality downloads end up looking fine on my 42" plasma tv.

Handbrake never works for me... apparently I'm always trying to rip a protected source.

There is a guide on their website to crack the encryption.
