Well I know that I'm eligible for the update because mine is unlocked and my firmware ends in XEU, which is eligible, and your site confirms that too. I just can't seem to connect to Kies in the right way. It recognises the phone, but says that software upgrading is not compatible. Weird!

Basically, where I think I'm having a problem is this step.

"You will now see a picture of a USB connector entitled MTP Application, with a message on the bottom saying Connected Press home key to quit Samsung Kies."

I used to get that screen, but I no longer do.
When I upgraded my friends OS, this happened, but it doesn't with mine.

Now, why, is the question.

I have the Samsung Galaxy Sii and its generally a great phone.  However, Kies really is a piece of shit and I have to connect my phone as a USB device in order to transfer songs/pictures etc.

Yup I avoid Kies wherever possible. But in this case, I can't.

Have you managed to successfully upgrade yours?
