Need advice on web editing tools. Wife needs to build a website from scratch; what is the best tool? Frontpage? Dreamweaver? Something else I don't know about?

Is it going to be a static site, or will it be updated regularly?

I use Microsoft Expression Web. It works fine for me.

What is the website for?

What functionality does it need?

She basically needs to produce version of this that looks like it was produced in the 21st century

Does that help?

Notepad

As in Windows Notepad? Surely that involves knowledge of html coding, which to be fair, she has fuck all knowledge of (and wishes to avoid where possible)

If it was me I'd use Drupal. Though you might get away with Wordpress, which is a lot easier to use (at first).

Forget using anything like Dreamweaver, Frontpage / Expression Web or Notepad and doing it manually - complete overkill and totally unnecessary for a site like that especially if you're not technical. A decent CMS (such as Drupal, Joomla, Wordpress) will do everything you want and more and make editing the content a piece of piss.

As it's for a good cause, I'd be happy to help with it if you're OK going with Drupal.

Any mileage in looking for a (free) template and tailoring for her needs? Not done much web stuff myself so that's a question for the floor.

Looks like it would be perfect for Joomla. Free software with lots of free to download templates.

All above options noted, thanks all - and thanks for the very kind offer jonny. She's having a crack herself using Moonfruit I think. If it all goes tits up, I'll come back seeking more advice.
