Morning Townend.

I need to buy Mrs Wiggy a new laptop, and as we have a Currys in Devizes I want to get one there.

It will only be used for facebook, online shopping and I-player, so doesn't need many features.

Currys have these three - any thoughts or bad experiences with brands appreciated:

If that's all she wants to do on it then what about a Netbook? Can pick one up for under £200.

With the amount of stuff she watches on I-player/4OD etc she doesn't want a screen that small.

i bought a lenovo g570 a couple of months ago, it's higher spec than the one you've spotted (i5-2410) but same memory and what looks like the same shell (if that is the word?).  been very happy with it, screen is great, battery life is fantastic, got function keys to adjust brightness really easily to conserve power if you need to.  it is prone to finger prints because of the shiny exterior but that doesn't concern me at all.  build quality is good.

as stfcinbmth suggested to me you can join quidco and link to currys from there and you'll get a little bit of cashback, maybe also a voucher for further discount.  you will hopefully also be able to reserve and collect through this service.

can't offer any help on the others i'm afraid.

Having recently been in the market for a lappy myself I found I used the benchmark comparison web sites a lot.

I would suggest spending just a few pounds more and getting this one from Tesco for £339.

http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.212-1325.aspx

It has a core i3 CPU which is far superior to the crappy Celerons and much better than the AMD dual core.

In the comparison chart you will see the AMD E-350 comes in at 326th, the Celeron T3500 comes in at 177th and the i3 370M comes in at 76th.

This is an average based on all the benchmarks.

What this basically means is that it will run applications such as iPlayer/flash/word a fair bit faster and smoother and has better memory handling than the other 2.

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmarklist.2436.0.html

just food for thought, a bit of future proofing for a small outlay extra.

There are 2 other computers in the house, one with an i3 processor and one with an i5, so it does seem like a step backwards to a dual core, but conversely money is an issue at the moment and the ones I linked to at the top of the thread all have massively better specs than her old one that has just died. My kids might notice slower/jerkier flash applications, but my wife won't!

If processor speed isn't an issue then ebuyer outlet express (via ebay) was selling a 2GB, P6200 pentium version of this for £255 delivered (with free case and anti-virus crap-wear).

An extra 2GB of ram is £10.

Deal looks to be off right now but has been on and off recently a worth a check if you can wait. Delivery speed was next day.

Disappointing aspects:
- Sound is too quiet on max volume.
- Battery life is a little disappointing (i3 should be better in this respects)
- Screen is bright if a little reflective, but poor viewing angles and a tendency to make some things a little 'blocky'. My 8 year old Dell had a better screen (but was £900) new Smiley

Minor quibbles, £250 for a capable general purpose Win 7 laptop is value for money in my book.
