According to Wikipedia (I know, I know) he joined us in June 2010 on an initial two year deal, with an option for a third year. Does this mean we've released him or have Colchester actually paid fucking money for this Northern wankrag?

I honestly don't think he's as bad as people are making out. Mediocre but not total shit. I won't be losing sleep on it though, he's no Greer.
However I do think he is a bit of a 'too good' in attitude. Which is why we are a million times better off without him and anyone else of the same mindset.

He had to go, consistantly showed complete disrespect towards the hierarchy of the club.

That makes a bit more sense. If Colchester were going to shell out some money for a LB, I'm sure they could have found someone better than Rose? Did we pay anything for him - I can't remember?
