Am i right in thinking that the speed of my broadband will only be as good as whatever the speed my laptop can exchange data with the wireless modem? And if so is it therefore pointless upgrading my broadband package?

Depends on the wireless protocol of your router/wireless card in the laptop.
If they're wireless G (802.11G) that's a speed of 54Mbits/s which is faster than most broadband line speeds.

There should be a wireless or networks icon in the system tray (the bit in the bottom right of the screen next to the clock), which if you click on it will bring up details of the connection.
If you get stuck post again with your windows version as to find out will be different depending on which version you use.

Although the theoretical throughput of Wireless G is 54 Mbits/s, it will typically have throughput of 22 Mbits/s.
If you're on standard ADSL Max (i.e. up to 8 Mbits/s) it could be worth an upgrade to ADSL2+ (up to 24 Mbits/s).

And the theoretical speed of the broadband line is never as high either. I can't think of one occassion where I've achieved near to the quoted maximum speeds.

Obviously depends how far you are from the exchange. When I was on ADSL, I consistently got maximum speeds.
