I have SNES, Spectrum, Amiga, Saturn, Mega Drive and C64 emulators on my PC for those moments when Jet Set Willy or Pyjamarama are the orrder of the day.....all free if you know where to find them, lovely and nostalgic.

The emulator is the software that pretends to be the console/computer, the ROM is the software that pretends to be the game

This.

You also need a kickstart ROM for any added ROM to work on the Amiga.

Most other emulators though you don't need one and just run the program.

Actually, technically I think the ROMs are the actual games just in a binary format but it doesn't really matter from a user perspective.

You should try them Dave, they are easy to download, takes 5 mins setting up and free.

They run on pretty much any PC or laptop.

I've gone back to old games before and found that they are not as good as I remember them to be, so now I keep clear to keep my positive memories of them (and by extension my childhood) intact.

I can understand that, games have come along massively but I playing them for the nostalgia and do still enjoy them, but I don't play sessions just the occassional hour here and there.

With the Spectum and C64 half the fun was waiting begging for the tape not to fail after 15 minutes of loading, it sort of made the anticipation stronger and you tended to play games for longer because you couldn't swap games instantly as you do now....it does change it when it loads in seconds.

The old Football Manager used to have a critical point at about 108 on the tape deck that it could crash while loading, it took 132 in total.  In real terms that was about 25 minutes I think.
