Whoever the manager is, if we are waiting until the summer to sign players, then I think you can forget next season for a promotion challenge as well.

Why are you under the impression you cant sign good players in the summer?

You can, but I dont think you get value for money in the summer, unless you wait until deadline week, when it might well be too late. You might have brought in another player (see Prutton and Ferry this summer).

Its all about being the highest bidder in the summer. Fees and wages. Agents get a bit busy, I also think that during the close season most players seem to think they are a lot better than they actually are. Whereas during the season, its more obvious what the real value of players is.

Getting Douglas was a bit of a miracle, and was down to the fact that he wanted to sign for us. He got offers of bigger wages from other clubs.

1913.

you're right

They were first promoted to the old First Division (then the top flight) in 1904 but were relegated in 1913 after finishing bottom. They were controversially promoted to the First Division again in 1919 despite only finishing 5th in the Second Division (at the time they were officially placed 6th due to an error in calculating goal averages).

The dubious claim that they have never been relegated as Spencer rightly points out rests on the fact that they changed their name in 1914 from Woolwich Arsenal to Arsenal.

Thats a bad thing. Agents and players just sit on offers in the summer, waiting for a better one to come in.

I always thought it was generally reckoned Jan was a more expensive time to buy, and with less quality available. That's what all the pundits seem to keep saying
