If you hand in your notice but the company turn round and say it's ok(they havn't) you can leave now should i still get paid for that week?

You should get paid for the amount of notice that you are required to give (depending on length of service) whether you work it or not.

A colleague of mine recently handed in his notice, and because he was going to a competitor he was told to leave straight away. So basically he had the whole of August off as paid leave before starting his new job.

When I handed in my notice at Nationwide I only worked two weeks of my month notice period but still got paid for all 4.
