Right, I'm using an Acer Aspire3680 that came with Vista. Unfortunatley the laptop was not man enough to cope with it. I couldn't get it to work properly at all, so in the end I decided to put XP on instead. Not being a techie type, I didn't bother to make notes of drivers etc and therefore had hours and hours of fun trying to get everything to work again. I eventually did it though, but now, 6 months later, have discovered that there remains a problem with the DVD drive. It won't play any DVD or CD and you can't write CDs nor DVDs. Furthermore, you can't install software from the the drive and you can't play any game.

Once you put the disc in, it spins and gives you the feeling that its going to work and then just stops.

Dear TEF. how can I fix it?

Would try downloading and installing Everest from here

http://majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

Once installed it will tell you the make and model of your dvd drive and you can then search for relevent drivers

Does Start-Control Panel-System-Device Manager show up with a yellow triangle on the device?

So, I downloaded Everest and ran a report. It says:

 [ TSSTcorp CDW/DVD TS-L462D ]

  Device Properties:
   Driver Description   TSSTcorp CDW/DVD TS-L462D
   Driver Date   01/07/2001
   Driver Version   5.1.2535.0
   Driver Provider   Microsoft
   INF File   cdrom.inf

  Optical Drive Properties:
   Manufacturer   Toshiba-Samsung
   Device Type   DVD-ROM/CD-RW
   Interface   ATAPI

  Writing Speeds:
   CD-R   24x
   CD-RW   10x

  Reading Speeds:
   DVD-ROM   8x
   CD-ROM   24x

  Device Manufacturer:
Company Name   Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology
   Product Information   http://www.tsstorage.com/korea/en/product/info.php
   Firmware Download   http://www.samsungodd.com/eng/LiveUpdate/LiveUpdate.asp

I clicked on the Firmware download and downloaded Samsungs Liveupdate software. When I use it to look for the DVD drive it says its unsupported.

When I go to the product information link above it says that the page doesn't exisit.

Any other suggestions?

Did you get this sorted. If not there's a fix from Microsoft for XP, worth a try on Vista I guess
