iphone audio jack crackling

first of all: it's not the headphones. they work fine on my macbook.

the audio jack on my iphone 3g isn't working properly, there is only sound coming through the left ear unless you press and hold the headphone cable.

is this a common problem? can it be fixed? my warranty is expired, i believe.

Yes, it is a common problem with the headphone jack on the 3G.

As it's out of warranty, Apple won't do anything about it. You can replace it yourself, but I'm not sure how easy it is to do.

Your 1st error to using an iphone to create crackling.  You should have used a dead pig.
