Don't know if you've been there at all but I have been on occasions and had the opportunity to hear both sides of the 'history' about the regime, although not complete angels by any standards generally their shit state over the years has been a result of the blockade imposed on them by the USA because they didn't tow Uncle Sams line. A significant influence on their insularity has been the very fact that USA has been successful in painting them as an international pariah and convincing many countries and people not to deal with them. It is also quite a different place now than it was even just 15 years ago resulting from some relaxation of trade constraints etc over recent years.
