Chalkie, I seem to disagree with almost everything you say on here - but I take my hat off to you, that's a very brave thing you're doing, and I wish you the very best of luck.

Fair play mate, I got made redundant in January and took some time out to finish the extension on my house and consider my options.  I have a lot of pharma manufacturing operation experience linked in with IT/system integration knowledge and working directly for another employer didn't appeal and, having been fucked around by agency placing adverts for roles that didn't exist, decided to go it alone.

I now have work coming in from both the UK and Ireland from major corporates (Pepsi, Merck, GSK) and have teamed up with two other guys in Ireland who are experts in Project management and System automation (SCADA. PLC etc). As a result we are able to offer a complete service to any industry loking to streamline systems through integration and automation.

Because we work with the business to understand their complete needs we are often asked to provide services outside our standard offering and usually refer these to third parties that specialise in those area's - it would be god to understand more about what you are offering so if anything comes up I can give you the nod - PM me your email address or connect to me on linkedin... http://uk.linkedin.com/in/rossiterpj and I'll keep you on file

I wish you (and JFW, for that matter) the very best of luck, and prosperity.

It seems that if more people were to set up their own business (and obviously make a success of it), then the country would get back on its' feet more rapidly and we would all benefit as a consequence. Sounds simple doesn't it, but there are obviously massive factors stopping people from taking the plunge.

I also fall into the 'would-love-to-be-my-own-boss-but-currently-wouldn't-know-where-to-start' category. I've built up a fair bit of experience in some key areas but I would do anything (apart from the obvious) - as long as I'm;

a) my own boss, and
b) earning a decent living........I really wouldn't care what it was - as long as a) & b) are happening then I'm fucking delirious.

Thanks to you all and good luck JFW.
Well I did the deed today and in 8 - 10 weeks time I'll be on my own.
Now I'd better get busy and start telling people I'm available for hire.
No doubt there will be some late night pissed postings updating my situation.

good luck mate, I have been running my own business for 15 years, when things are going well make sure you put something aside because there will be bleak times.

We should have a proper TEF trades directory. The Red Pages or something. I'm sure we all have unique and valuable skills. Mostly involving alchohol.
