I was blown away by the track Stay Wide Awake off the Relapse album. Very dark and he seemed back on top form lyrically and with the way he was flowing.
Haven't heard that latest album properly yet. Will have to give it a proper listen.

There's no doubt that Eminem has sold more records and writes a little better, but the Beastie Boys did it before him (1986 to Eminem's 1999) so they have to be recognised as the pioneers in that respect - there is no finer example of bringing hip hop to the white middle classes than the Beasties, who are white, middle class, Jewish!
I've never got this "bringing hip hop to the white middle classes" argument. Growing up in the 80's I didn't need white rap artists to sell the music to me and I doubt the vast majority of people didn't either - none of my mates did. I wasn't one of the cool hip kids either, just in to music and the artists skin colour didn't matter. Though I'm sure Eminem did have a major effect on making rap music ok for the upper classes to listen to, but it wasn't just his skin colour that did that - his music and lyrics were a major part of it. |
