Is that what you said to the wife?

Nice.... the Swindon to London route, used a chunk of that run, turning off near Hungerford, into Chilton Foliat.  I hoped to have seen the Harris's factory in Calne.
Yeah, you just see the edge of Harris factory on the right, I remember it stood in town until the early 80s. The bit further on just before the Kings Arms pub shows the town gardens on the left (before my time), the A4 passes through there now.

This is more the sort of view I recall....

I remember the factory being knocked down but I had forgotten what the town used to look like

Yeah, that was all there when I was a kid. The smell of offal and the squeals of pigs on my way to school  Smiley
To the left of that pic the shops used to go all the way up the hill but got demolished some time before the factory (factory was demolished in 82/83), I think the shops must have gone in the early to mid 70s. They replaced the frontage with a grey wooden panel for years.
The ivy covered building was a bank, after the factory was demolished there was an area that got used by a kebab van, the area affectionately got nicknamed Cesar's Palace by us locals. Smiley

I'll speak to my old man tonight, I'm sure he's got some pics from the demolition era, I'll stick them on here.

It's The Strand. That pic is taken from the Lansdowne Hotel. Wood street would be to the left of the view you can see, about 400 yards away out of pic. That's Church Street straight opposite in the pic.

If you go on google maps street view and drop it outside the Lansdowne hotel facing Church Street, you will see the big metal head lying on the pavement outside the new library. That is where the little row of shops were in the pic put up by Reg. Opposite is the bank building (behind the tree)

Something positive. If successful on industrial scales, this has the potential to maybe address to a degree several hitherto intractable problems.

He might realise you're not talking about Swindon at some point.
