Amen to that, just booked a Jeep Cherokee for the first leg of our road trip from New York to Vegas, then a Ford Mustang Convertible to transport us from Vegas to San Fran. 2 months to cover the distance, then onto Peru and Ecuador. Wahooo!

I want to do something similar, although only up to San Fran. Have you planned everything in between, where you're stopping over and what sights to see and what not? And if you don't mind me asking, how much is it costing? (PM me if you want, Merci.)

I'll put it on here in case people chip in with any tips.

We are keeping the planning purposefully 'organic'. So we've got a rough route and stops planned and an idea of what we'd like to see/do. But nothing apart from the cars booked, though we'll definitely book our New York hostel and probably a Vegas hotel before leaving. We have just over a month to get from NY to Vegas, and then 3/4 weeks of exploring the West Coast up to San Fran.

Return flights were about £700, cars about £850 each for the whole time. The total cost depends on how lavish we get and how many extra things we want to do (I'm bungee jumping the Grand Canyon for instance), but I think it will be at least four grand, maybe six.

Our route at the moment goes like this:

NY > Philadelphia > DC > Roanoke > Knoxville > Nashville > Birmingham > New Orleans > Houston > Austin > El Paso > Albuquerque > Grand Canyon > Vegas > San Diego > LA > San Fran

Tips on where to go/what to do are welcome.

Our route at the moment goes like this:

NY > Philadelphia > DC >
Most stuff at these places are well known. Tripadvisor.com is your friend

Roanoke >
Big lake and lots of trails

Knoxville >
Nowt there

Nashville >
Dollywood
Downtown tour has a yellow line on the sidewalk which you can follow with a map highlighting points of interest.

Birmingham >
Nowt there

New Orleans >
Bourbon street
Paddle steamer buffet and jazz band on Mississippi is tackier than it sounds. Couple of floating casinos.

Houston >
Shit hole. Lots of petro-chemical refineries. Could go to Galveston which is the closest seaside resort. There's a little pier but lots of druggies after dark though.

Austin > El Paso >
Nowt there

Albuquerque >
Beautiful Spanish town with mountain backdrop

Grand Canyon >
Big ditch

Vegas >
Hoover dam. Hearst Castle is on the way to SD from there I think

San Diego >
Coronado is nice. The Hotel del Coronado is where lots of Presidents have been on holiday. Lots of ships to see. Seaworld. Nice downtown. 17 mile drive is cool as you head up west coast.

LA > San Fran
Pretty well known. LA is a busy dive with all the tourist attractions worth venturing in to see once then getting the hell out of Dodge! SF has a couple of bridges, Fishermans' wharf, a tram and Lombard St (crooked road).

Worth going to a baseball game in one of the cities just for the experience. Been to Houston which has a cool train drive past the scoreboard when the Astro's score. Cheap as chips too.
