Excuse my ignorance, but what were they actually protesting against?

They refused to employ gay people, and/or serve them, something like that.

They're proper hard-core far-right Christians with all the bigotry that comes with it.

How would anyone know a customer may be gay?

Aren’t there anti discrimination laws in the US?

The CEO spoke about pretty openly against gay marriage, and their original founder set up a charity that had donated to organisations that were hostile towards to LGBT people. They stopped the funding years ago, but there was still a couple of organisations they donate to (such as the Salvation Army) who are also hostile towards LGBT people (I can't say that for sure I don't know if they are or not). Basically they are owned by right wing Christians and the views that come with it.

The stuff about not hiring gay people or serving gay people is not true I don't think.

Yep, lot's of anti homosexual stuff and anti abortion etc.  They refuse to open on a Sunday in the US, one of the very few businesses to do so..  They have thousands of sites, and Americans love their Sunday take outs, so imagine how much extra revenue they coud be making as a business - just goes to show how strict in their beliefs that the owners are..

Each to their own

They're very Christian. A lot of the intolerance they spout is found in the bible, including killing the gays and stuff.

Chick-fil-A's ownership is a bit extreme and I think the Sally Army is more so over here as well.  The locals are OK though, because after church kicks out on Sunday at lunch time, Cracker Barrell is open.

I see your point. I've met many Christians who don't agree with this stance, however.  Still, as an atheist, I'll let them worry about their interpretation of the bible.

Edit: Thankfully there are laws against the extreme actions you've mentioned.  However, it's depressing that people hold these views, whatever the reason. They are unjustifiable and wrong.
