Way before all day opening Devizes was the place to be on a Market Day for extra pm boozing time.

Used to get a regular lock in at The French Horn in Pewsey, too.

"Sent to Devizes" was a phrase used to strike fear into people in my younger days.
Home of the Wiltshire County Lunatic Asylum as it was first called.
A lot of former work colleagues live in Devizes.

A Wadworths beer on draught anywhere is always a welcome sight.
My mum always used to say "off to Devizes" when somebody was a bit "touched" mentally!

As an aside, my brand new Hyundai Ioniq's sat nav has Devizes spelt as Devises.

That was the local of my brother in law, he was born and brung up in Pewsey, hes around 60 so you may well know him if you went there regularly, he was and still is a big Town fan.

Because I chose to play the fool in a six-piece band
First-night nerves every one-night stand
I should be glad to be so inclined
What a waste! What a waste!

He was definately in there at that time, he would have been in his late teens early 20s.

I was in the RAF at Upavon at the time and used to go in fairly regularly with my best mate from Antigua. I’m racking my brains to think of the landlord’s name - Peachy(?) or summit like that.

I was in Pewsey in the week.  Very nice place, not up its own arse like Marlborough, not overrun with cars like The Vize. Still a few signs of being a working sort of place, although this summation would need to be tempered by the fact that being on the Waterloo line, prob means it's overrun with Tories evenings and weekends.

Two nice ladies asked me if I was a local.... the answer of Swindon, meant a no then as far as they were concerned.

Oh yes. The Big one and the Little one.
Pain in the arse to get through Marlborough after work on the Fridays once the High Street was closed.

Do they still have the Marlborough Mop?

Yep,despite local traders trying to get it stopped.

Talking of the French horn pub, apparently it was named in honour of the French prisoners of war that dug the K and A canal there.
Gone now,unfortunately.

Why were there French prisoners of war in England, let alone Pewsey?

Napoleonic wars.

Quote
Pewsey Wharf boasts numerous facilities for boaters and visitors alike, including a slipway and moorings. The former warehouse is now known as The Waterfront, a cafe serving a variety of refreshments.

The nearby pub, The French Horn, is said to be named in honour of those French prisoners of war who worked on constructing the canal and whose working day was ended by the blowing of a horn.

Cheers. Interesting fact. I always presumed it was named after the instrument!
