The issue is there is no fear of repercussion. The police aren't a 'feared' force anymore. There is lack of respect for the law.
I'd suggest more a lack of mutual respect. Not sure respect for/fear of the law was ever that much of a driver in some communities, whereas respect for others and/or fear of repercussions in the community always was.

It's not a 'now' thing. It's always been the case, probably always will be.

I think you'll find this is probably down to tabloid-esque reporting, including from the adver.

They focus on reporting the cases where sentencing appears to be light, but hardly ever report on cases where sterner sentences are handed out. Giving people something to get angry about sells papers.

Can I suggest that anyone with any interests/concerns about the state of the criminal courts/sentencing etc read the book The Secret Barrister , I am only about 50% of the way through so far and its been a total eyeopener as to why the system is buggered and the nonsense that the media and politicians like to spout to deflect stories away from whats really happening!

As a clue... here is a taster on Twitter https://twitter.com/BarristerSecret/status/1130388511088103425

Durian

Are you sure it's not the wife's feet you can smell?

Durian

Have you tried it? I know it stinks, but it tastes quite good.

It's still banned from my house, though, as the smell permeates into everything. Leave it in the fridge and you end up with durian cheese, durian milk... and so on.

Noooooooo, the smell is far too offputting. Seems to be all pervasive in Vietnam, as I’m sure it is everywhere in SE Asia - sewage/rotting flesh smelling fruit hasn’t appealled so far

I just set about my hair with the clippers. I usually use a #1 guard but it wasn't until I got tucked in that I realized I forgot to put any guard on.

Oops.

I number #1d the rest. Now I have a landing strip at the front of my head. It's not that noticeable to be honest. Still, I'm left wondering whether or not to no-guard the rest or just leave it as it is. It'll grow out in a few days (although I am expecting to go out on the lash tomorrow). Maybe if I pull my trousers down around my arse, walk with a limp and call everybody homey, people will think it's a gang marking?
