I’m still wondering how Audrey spends £500 a month on 2 people in a supermarket
Me too, so I looked closely at my bank statements and have come to an alarming conclusion.

Me and Mrs Audrey both work 3 days a week and get a sandwich plus drink for lunch at separate M&S's. That comes to a whopping £144 a month. Add to that we look after our grandson twice a week and go for coffee and cake each time at about a tenner a go. That comes to £80 a month.

So that is £222 a month on, basically, fuck all. Brings down the actual food spend down to below £300 which is a bit more realistic.

I do grow some myself. Potted herbs, toms, microgreens, courgette and a few other bits. Have tried growing calabrese  (purple sprouting) but have had no joy for some reason. There are also plenty of foragable wild peas, garlic, clover, spinach. Nasturtiums are great and easy to grow, especially if you want a peppery kick in a salad or blended into homemade pesto. You can eat the lot and the flavour system works exactly the same as peppers (green leaf - bitter/water, like bitter watercress, yellow flower - mild nutty, orange flower - still nutty a little more peppery, red - nuttiness recedes and sweetness replaces but has a similar pepper edge). Great for tarting up a steak or chilli or even a nice mixed bean medley. Plus the look great in the garden on summer and you can get several harvests.

Tracking back slightly - that actual shop was just for what I needed at the time and off the top of my head. Think the oranges cover me for scurvy and the bananas avoid other deficiencies too. I think I may have had some lettuce, carrots and courgette in. I count the tinned toms and stuff like frozen peas etc as a top up in the fruit and veg dept.

Chlorine, hormone fed, stacked in cages, chicken thighs would cost me about $5 here - hence why everyone goes out to eat.

Don't think we've got to the chlorination stage yet but it could be soon to change. Welfare standards is a pretty poor system any way. I've been lucky to live in places where they've reared their own stock (pigs, beef, dairy, poultry) as well as farmed their own fruit and veg (a large amount for the animals). Regulation is needed of course but it speaks volumes about any industry really. Essentially there are that many poorly practising (or bad actors) companies that they need to be regulated.

It baffles me that to grow organic (to Soil Association standards) you have to prove the pesticides and accelerants you aren't using, continued soil samples to prove the land is free of chem and microbio constituents to ensure the land is "clean". I think it was something like if it gets tested and comes back above, you get one chance to make improvement or your certificate is revoked. It's hard though, things like brassicas (cauliflower, broccoli to the layman) effect the ground so you have to be even more savvy in crop rotation. In some cases, I know people who have given up their organic farming exploits for retail/commercial, because there is more red tape to jump through than if you farm the "normal" way. That isn't right but I also respect that it's not an easy transition for a farmer to make. Not when they work hard and long just so we can pick a box off a shelf.

The list Bamboo posted would no way cost anywhere near £12.50 unless he's getting most of it from a food bank.

No way that came to 12.50. If it did, i want to know where as that's where i'm shopping. I shop in asda, and purchase a lot of what is on that list and I guesstimate that to be £20

I have a similar receipt from another one I did. In fact it's pretty much identical except for the Milk & Tea Bags (I think) and this one was under £11.
