Who is hailing a turnout of 62.5%? It's poor, but that is down to the voter unless you have a forced voting system.
I hate politics and no allegiance to any party, some people vote for the same party at every general election regardless of manifesto.
It's not completely down to the voter though is it? If you live in a safe seat but you swing the other way, why bother voting? If you are a particular demographic and feel none of the candidates speak for you, why bother voting? |

This thought had crossed my mind. I live in a tory safe seat that has been that way since the dawn of time and the current incumbent, despite being an absolute arsehead, has held the seat for nearly 40 years. |

Of course, but that's to be expected in a multi-party system. With a (reasonable) electoral system which reassigns second preferences, you'd expect Buckland to pick up at least 2/3 of the UKIP vote there and go past 50% even if every single Lib Dem and Green seconded Labour. UKIP + Tories have been a +50% vote share across England for a long while now, the electorate is more right wing than most would like to believe, largely because age is a huge factor in turnout. Doesn't mean FPTP isn't crap mind. |

The left in particularly England, has always had relatively small numbers. Also I don't particularly buy the young left, old right argument. The key is the balance between how for to the right, the mainstream clunks away from its usual fairly slightly right centre. Brexit is presently the playing out of this process, as Continental social democracy is not something to the taste of many in the Tory party and their apologists. |
