The Portuguese have been long time allies of Britain.....take the Peninsula War, the French and their Spanish quislings invaded and occupied Portugal, and it was only with the aid of the British Army under Wellington, that the Portuguese irregulars, freed the country. The Spanish, never particularly to be trusted, switched sides and so enabled Wellington to defeat the French at Salamanca and Vitoria.
The war was costly for the Iberian empire, enabling independence movements to succeed notably in South America, and neither Portugal had been particularly stable up until accession to the EU.
Bunch of cunts now though....

Is it though? My sympathies are with the family of the woman that was attacked, along with another person that was allegedly attacked. But is it a worrying day? Nut-jobs have walked the earth since man existed, should we spend the rest of our lives worrying about it? Would we have even have heard about it if she wasn't a 'somebody'? Why does the fact that her job was an MP make it any more significant?

This. Puzzled how it's a "worrying day".

Because it undermines/attacks democracy.

How? How does the action of an individual undermine/attack democracy? Is democracy that weak?
If it appeared to be a trend that was occurring that politicians (or people of any other profession) were being attacked then I'd agree, but this just appears to be a random attack from a particular nut-job acting alone.
What mostly grabs my attention is that he had a gun.

I probably worded it badly and should have kept my mouth shut.
There are many nutters in the world, however there has been nothing reported as yet to suggest that this is a random attack which suggests that instead she was targeted as she is an MP. Thankfully we don't have a habit of killing our elected members in this country so when it happens it is a shock, and the suggested right wing angle, coming at a time when the right is getting ever more confident in the UK just seemed a somewhat shocking development.
That is all.

It's just a discussion, nobody's attacking you personally There are many nutters in the world, however there has been nothing reported as yet to suggest that this is a random attack which suggests that instead she was targeted as she is an MP.
Actually, there is nothing to suggest that this was an organised attack which, so far, suggests very strongly that this was the act of an individual loon.

Even if it is a lone wolf attack, it undermines democracy if it reduces the willingness of MPs to meet their constituents in public places (she was attacked outside a community surgery in a library). Stephen Timms got stabbed at one of these events a few years ago, but they're hugely valuable for constituents.

So democracy is that weak?
And is it really a 'worrying day'? (which is the initial comment I responded to)
