The judge basically said he was guilty of murder when sentencing, but the jury didn't find him to be guilty.

---

Mr Justice Jacobs told Brehmer he was sentencing him "on the basis you lost your self-control following the sending of the text message to your wife where the affair was revealed, rather than on the basis that you had no intention to kill or cause really serious harm".

"I am sure that you did deliberately take Claire Parry by the neck applying significant force with your forearm or the crook of your elbow for a period of time while she struggled against you, thereby causing...severe neck injuries," the judge added.

That is why we have both Murder and Manslaughter though, with wide sentencing options.  When reading court transcripts, most people usually sentence people for less than the Courts did if they di it blind.  I imagine there is insufficient evidence to conclude pre-meditation and intent - it was a heat of the moment action and the 10 years suggests it was pretty close to meeting the Murder bar.  As the jury were presented both charges, it suggests everyone thought it was likely Murder was tough to make stick.

France under lockdown again as of Friday, was due to catch a 06:15 ferry back there tomorrow morning to get back to where I work the winters, had to cancel that.

Feeling absolutely gutted, the Brexit clock is ticking and I'm trying to commit to becoming a French resident and I can't even get there, well I can but that would mean being in a small flat on my own only being allowed out an hour per day.  Totally fucked me in the first lockdown so can't face it again.

This is quite an interesting read providing some explanation of the process followed.

What is probably most positive is that it shows the proper journalism can actually still be done occasionally!

Good journalism exists in lots of places, you just have to pay for it these days.

Any pension experts on here?

I’ve had an annuity paid for years from my cashed in Zurich pension - always been the same amount. Today the amount has increased by nearly 50%.

Is this likely to be a mistake as I thought annuity amounts were set in stone once taken.

How old are you? A lot of pensions are automatically recalculated, taking into account inflation, when you reach the state pension age.

I took my pension benefits when I was 50. Now approaching state pension age (66 in April). I have 2 pensions with Dunbar (Zurich) both taken at the same time, only 1 has had this surprising increase. I’ve had no paperwork from them.

I imagine as they’ve paid out the same amount for over 15 years it’s all automatic so I can’t see it being human error.

Maybe you’re right about an increase when becoming nearly dead!

Is it sad I just picked up my phone and got the notification on the BBC app that this quake had occurred and my first thought was 'I hope Audrey is okay'

Samos is across the water from where our apartment is in Kusadasi. Apparently the earth moved for a lot of people there that we know!
