spooky, saw one yesterday at the end of the road. not seen one in years.

assuming you are taking about the van type, not man and cart.

Sweepers of the Men and cart variety  are regular sights in Lancaster.

Anyone else noticed near empty pubs so far this month?
People watching the pennies after Christmas or on Dry January?

More room for the serious drinkers to operate, but not so good for the pub trade.

Friday. On the piss in O$&?@d, where is everyone.
Slow moving tourists preventing rapid transit to the next pub remain a problem though.

Shame on you.  Smiley

Anyway, hope you are feeling well or much weller, so to speak, as 2019 pans out.

Been to the bank to open a Greek account.

Jeez, that’s 2 hours of my life I’ll never get back. I’m sure MI6 don’t ask for as much proof to be a spy then they want for a bank account.

Done the full bureaucratic gamut today - solicitor, notary, bank, accountant. It better be good here!

Have you actually moved yet? Do you speak Greek?

I’ve had an offer accepted on a house here and you are required to have a Greek bank account to be able to purchase it.

The solicitor’s sister teaches Greek to us heathens so, as she is a bit tasty, I’ll give it a go!

It’s going to be a hard slog, for sure. Got to put some effort in, though. Show willing and all that.

How’s your Thai?

OK, but not as good as it should be. I'm often surrounded by English speakers and I'm too lazy to bother trying to learn. I can't read or write a word, though.

Is it as weird as France where  my step mother had to formally adopt me (I was in my 30's at the time) due to the strange inheritance laws over there.

I did mention wills to the solicitor. Unless specified otherwise a jointly owned house (along with any other assets) is divided up - 25% to the surviving spouse and 75% to the children.

Have to change that. Also, regarding paying tax. Your house and car are valued and the resulting value forms the basis for tax along the lines that if you have a €160,000 house you must, therefore, have a certain level of income to afford it and are taxed on that supposition! Whether you actually have that income or not. It’s bizzarre.

Born out of the Greek love of avoiding paying tax of any description. I blame the Germans imposing this sort of austerity measure in return for the bail out!
