going by the responses here, mayo appears to be the new marmite (which I love incidentally).
I love mayo, and not got an issue with garlic mayo, is aioli the same as garlic mayo? I like that also.

Hated mayo when I was a kid, OK with it now, incidentally I was exactly the same with sweetcorn.

Only posh people call it aioli. Mayo didn't exist in 50's early 60's Swindon.... just salad cream. It was only on meeting middle class ladies due to the social mobilty of further education, that I discovered its existence, along with a host of other foodstuffs, like avocados. I further discovered it's relatively easy to make your own.

Just because they are. There's no rules determining what they must be called. It would have been at the whim of the person/people introducing it into the language.

We have one come down our street at least once a week, usually about 5am.

Overeh here I get litter pickers, especially on the Interstate which must be a pretty anxiety ridden affair as a career choice - they work during the day at peak hours armed with a grabber thing and a black back coming right up to the side of the road. They put a little sign up to say they are ahead, but unlike the unwritten rule that says you must slow down and move over for broken down cars, it seems the done thing is to keep going at 70 right next to them.
