surprised this was allowed without criminal proceedings going forward, sets a massive precedent for other cases as well - surprised there isnt more in the press about this

i kinda understand based on the below but does seem a bit weird

The Crown Office said it stood by its previous decision not to prosecute the footballers.
A spokesman said: "As Lord Armstrong stated in his judgement, the standard of proof to be satisfied was that of the balance of probabilities which is a less onerous requirement than the standard in criminal cases, which is beyond reasonable doubt.

"Further, there is no requirement of corroboration in civil cases unlike in criminal cases.
"This case was looked at very carefully by Crown counsel who concluded that there was insufficient evidence in law to raise criminal proceedings. As a result no proceedings were instructed."

Indeed, it's pretty much the first case of its kind so it'll be interesting to see how things go forward.

Or if the clubs involved get anywhere near the press we did when we dared to think about signing McCormick [/persecution complex]

Why do some footballers suck their thumbs? Is there some (lame) significance to it?

James Ellington & Nigel Levine: British sprinters 'truly blessed' to be alive - http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/athletics/38663811

Isn't there usually a contractual clause that athletes should not place themselves in such dangerous situations?

I can't imagine they're "contracted" by anyone? Maybe some small amount of funding from the BOA but that's about it.

In football its on a player by player basis, certain things are stipulated in their contracts.
I seem to remember Fergie banning Nani from doing his back flip celebration. Barcelona actually forbid all players to ride motorbikes and take part in extreme sports such as skiing, snowboarding etc.
Im sure the same goes with most sports.

It's entirely self-diagnosed at this stage, but I think I'm passing a kidney stone.

Unpleasant.
