John McGreal joins Ipswich Town in a coaching role.

In his first interview when asked why he joined the club he stated "it's Ipswich Town"

TBH I still think he would have done a decent job here.

Very true. Surprisingly decent appointment from the old regime. Would much rather what we have now of course.

I think McGreal could well have had a decent season and even possibly promotion but he was very much a manager who used tried and tested players rather than bringing through younger players, Garners approach is very different thats for certain.

Unless you take into account the payoff..

I'm so paranoid about the old owner I am not adverse to thinking it was another "cost Clem money" appointment (or he have assurances he knew he couldn't deliver)

yes, of course the payoff leaves a sour taste, but from a purely football perspective McGreal was a pretty good choice. Surprised he hasn't been offered anything since us really. (perhaps the contract business is restricting that or something)

Again I feel exactly the same.

Michael Carrick leaving Man Utd, would love him to join in the future as a manager but appreciate he’ll get a job higher up the ladder.

I don't get that any ex England player who recently quits and goes into coaching instantly becomes a target for bigger clubs, he and others don't deserve the right to manage at higher level sides and should serve a management apprenticeship further down the ladder but I guess many are scared of failure.

Getting a job in the top 2 leagues means he will get a much higher wage and bigger budget for players than he would get down the leagues. Lampard, Gerrard, Rooney etc all got big(ish) gigs as a first job, but I cant help looking at Hoddle, Ardiles (both came when we were seen as very small fish in a big pond)  and especially Macari who were at least as big names as Carrick is back then that came to little old Swindon to cut their teeth in management, that seems rare these days.

Not forgetting that he was key member of a coaching team that have done a quite frankly terrible job over the last 3 years!

Can’t imagine he will get many offers higher up the food chain as things stand
