As with the Wheatsheaf, the Plough will be a wet-led pub, which means it won’t be offering food and will focus on serving top of the range beer, wine, gin and other drinks.

I thought the only way pubs could stay in business was by doing food. Apparently not  Hmmm

It's strange that it seems to be 'a thing' as in an actual, conscious business decision...

I've spoken to pub owners that hate the food side of things. They say it's a lot of work, creates a lot of problems and only contributes a small amount to profits.

Of course, it helps to get the punters in at all but if you can get them in for the booze alone then why not.

The wifes bosses sister runs a country pub just outside of Yeovil and they recon about 90% of their revenue comes from the food side, they are more geared up to good food but they are no more than a country pub, they aren't a "gastro pub".

But food is the main reason you'd go to a country pub. They're often full of families and what-not that have driven up from wherever. Booze would be the main reason you'd go to other types of pub. When I'm out on the piss, I'd want to eat first. That would often mean going to a foody pub first and then moving on to a non-foody pub.

That leads to an interesting question - booze then curry. Or curry then booze.

I say the former. The yoof at work the latter.  I mean you can't drink much after a curry. But then again drinking on an empty stomach isn't great.

Really! I'd have thought the tax and anything the brewery can rob you blind with would have reduced that down to nearly nothing.

A friend of the Mrs used to run a country pub. They used to (illegitimately) stay open late and did quite a good trade with the farmers in the summer. Then they got dobbed in by someone (probably the other village pub). And that was that.

3-4 hours is fine, but we are talking meet for curry then straight to boozer.

Always booze before curry. The more the better. It's the law.

Absolulutely. I just didn't think it was a viable option these days.
