Another first for the mighty Town. 65/66 was an interesting season. First time we played Headington in a competitive fixture since our formation in 1879. The Don starting to get into his pomp, I think a lot assume that the Don was a striker.....but he was a proper old fashioned line hugging winger, so besides goals would provide assists for the likes of East. Cut off the supply to Don and we'd likely get 0, if he got the ball we'd get a few. Amazing to think that for a 1st round cup game v Merthyr, where East got his 4 the crowd was about 16,000. Bit disappointing that Keith only got the 19 league goals that season, so like Tommy Mooney just missed out on being a member of the pantheon of STFC 20 goal league a season league strikers. Oh how I'd love to see Luke Norris, or Nathan Delfouneso join the greats.

TBF if either of them were on the verge of becoming one of our greats they would be sold before becoming a fixture at the club. This unfortunately is the way of lower league football now (not just STFC) unlike the old days when players like Buckley at Walsall and Senior at Reading when they would stay with one club most of their career.

You can still do 20 goal league seasons, like Andy Williams and Nicky Ajose in the last 2. OK calling them greats might be exaggerating, but I like the fact that over the years we seem to have produced goal scorers....it would be interesting to do a comparison to other clubs of similar standing....Oxford for example have only ever had 2 players score 20 FL goals in a season.

Talking of old fashion wingers Reg I often speak to Colin Harrington. If you remember he was a speed merchant down the wing for Oxford in the 60's and we often talk about Don (one of his favourite players). He is still friends with Ken Skeen who lives in Cheltenham.

Must have seen him play, but no recall of Colin....do you remind him of his no win record v Town? http://www.swindon-town-fc.co.uk/PlayingRecord.asp?Type=Opponent&PersonID=harrington_colin_andrew_1943

Not quite the full story, that. He's also saved a pen in at least one of those games and by all accounts generally played pretty well behind a poor defence. There's a reason Southport is a good place to send a young keeper - they get plenty of opportunities to practice their art as they're often left exposed.
