If you've restored from a previous backup that was taken when your iPhone was jailbroken then there's a potential that they'll recognise it (even with no apps etc. present).

They can probably only offer a clean install anyway, which you can do yourself in iTunes.

You can do that yourself. If you Google for the iPhone 3.1.3 (or whatever) software you'll find it along with instructions on how to get iTunes to load it - pretty simply, I've had to do it a few times before.

If you're not bothered about restoring your previous backup, you can do a complete reset of the iPhone which clears everything . There is a special sequence of button presses and plugging it in that does it.

Anyone planning on getting an iPhone4 may want to hold off - it has a serious design flaw which kills reception if you, erm, hold it in your hand. You know, like you do with phones when making a call/sending texts. Or handheld devices (which I thought this was supposed to be) when sending texts/browsing the net etc.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/06/25/iphone4_antenna/

Or as the Register so beautifully put it "Version 4 not suited to use of opposable thumb"

For a company that prides itself on design and usability, this is a pretty massive fail.

APPLE has admitted it forgot to make sure its new mobile phone worked before shipping millions of them to stores around the globe.

The company has advised owners of the new iPhone4 that the device should function normally as long as they do not try to hold it with their hands.

A spokesman said: "Holding it with your feet should be okay as long as you're wearing Jesus sandals or flippers.

"But to get the most from your new iPhone you really need to fashion a holding device made from a coathanger, a Kraft cheese single and a fish slice.

Nathan Muir, an iPhone owner, said: "This is not my first mobile phone. In fact I bought my first one in October 1998 and in less than a fortnight I had worked out how to hold it properly. But I have always been really good with technology.

"Over the years Steve Jobs has managed to come up with so many colourful and imaginative ways of saying he's fucked something into a cocked hat, but I think 'you're holding it wrong' is my new favourite."

The funny thing is that it only happens if you hold the phone in a certain way, unfortunately for Apple the certain way is the way that any normal person would hold it. They could easily of made it a non issue by making some minor design changes and moving the black spot, I guess they didn't as it would have spoiled the aesthetic look.

Will be interesting to see how they deal with it. Looks like they may have actually accepted it is an issue and realised that telling people to hold it differently isn't an acceptable solution.

Doesn't the signal issue only happen if you hold the phone left handed?

It happens if you hold it normally in your left hand. Problems appears to be that there are two antennae's which are separated by a black band near the bottom of the left hand edge, when you put your hand over the band it connects the two and causes a short circuit / interference of some kind.

Hold it like Steve Jobs does and you're screwed....

** Edit **

Happens whether you are left or right handed as the black insulating band is on both sides.
