I'd imagine when the queen eventually dies then we probably will see something similar, especially for the coronation. If we had some radical lesbian transvestite who promised to bring super peace to the world made PM we'd probably see something similar too

I like Micheal Moore - he seems fat and kind and he helps me learn things

we are mostly enjoying the array of hats on show!

Michael Moore's documentaries are pretty terrible from a factual point of view though. He's pretty bad for sneakily editing things together, implying things that aren't true, using clips from whilst talking about something when the clips are really from something else. All those sort of things.

The whole inauguration thing, Copland's 'Fanfare for the Common Man', distant shots of the Lincoln Memorial with a West Wing soundtrack...

It struck me this morning that the respect and reverence American's have for their institutions cannot be matched by any other country.  While I sometimes baulk at the mawkishness of American patriotism, I also have to concede that elements of it are quite impressive, and even touching.

And the rituals (such as that of the inauguration) are pageantry, pure and simple - 21st century pageantry.  Ironically, most Americans would probably give the UK as an example of a country that still believes in pageantry.  But in my view, American pageantry is the most striking example you will find.
