Ah that's sad. I have a framed starwars poster signed by him(Dave Prowse is Darth Vader) up in my home bar. He was shunned by official star wars event's in his later years but cult fans still flocked to see him at unofficial ones.

He also came to Pinehurst school as the green cross code man when I was a young kid there. I remember he was a giant of a man in his costume telling us to do the green cross code. He toured the country doing this in the early 80s. A very likeable man. Rip.

It means the Green Cross Code Man definitely won't be there when you cross the road!  Sad

One of my favourite tweets was when Shilton posted this image and someone replied "Pity you couldn't punch that high in 1986."  Cheesy

Thats a shame, 42 is no age.

Contributed to one of Kammy's finest moments...

Same and I don't especially like golf. He's just one of those institutions you think will go on and on

Alliss is a legend. The voice of golf is the correct title for him. RIP

Yep, my first clear memory of him or at least recognising his distinguishable voice, was Nick Faldo's 3rd (?) Masters win in 1996; the great battle between Greg Norman and he. It was essentially "The Ashes" of Golf and who better to be around for it than Alliss.

I always remember he went against the grain for terminology. Instead of using "fade/draw" for drives or "sweep/curve" for putting, you'd often hear him pop up with innocent phrases like "oooh that's a fiine twister to the right by Woosnam" or "go on, go on, go on, noo! He's just tickled it around the cup there has Monty. Oh deary me."

They weren't his most famous or stand out quips but they were regular terms that only really Alliss could ever get away with. He's in the mold of Murray Walker in that instance. Distinct and partly unorthodox but incredibly knowledge in their field too.

His pacing in commentary was brilliant, he could leave you on the edge of your seat even if you knew the ball was going in.

Still, 89 is not a bad scorecard for an amateur. Sleep well Peter Alliss.
