I only saw him play once, in charity game for  at the County Ground in 1982 a game he played with a certain George Best, Don Rogers, Mick Channon, Mike Sumerbee, John Francombe, Ian Botham and Viv Richards.

Even with one eye and being in his mid 40s he still made a few excellent saves when he came on.

He was also due to have played at the CG in 1971 in the combined John Trollope/Roger Smart Testimonial game between the Town and Stoke City, which I attended.  But for reasons I can't remember, Stoke pulled out and were replaced by PNE!  Bizarrely, on the day, they sold the original match programme (which I still have) featuring Stoke City complete with a typed teamsheet as an insert.

The evening also included a 'kickabout game' between an ex-Swindon team and the "Top Ten XI".  The ex-Swindon team is listed as: Roy Jones, George Hunt, Terry Wollen, Keith Morgan, Fred Ford, Mel Nurse, Alan Ball (!), Dennis Brown, Roger Smart, Jack Howarth, Maurice Owen, Fred Thompson, Peter Doherty, Arnold D'Arcy (sic), Danny Williams and Ken Skeen. The "Top Ten XI" consisted of: Ed Stewart, David Hamilton, Miki Anthony, Richard O'Sullivan, Dick Richardson, Paul O'Shea, Gene Latter, Malcolm Roberts, Jeromy Bullock, Troy Dante, Krise Ife, Junior Campbell and Kevin O'Shea. Others listed in the original programme who, subsequently failed to show on the day, included:Jess Conrad, Dave Dee, Frazer Hines, John Peel (!), Brian Poole, Norman Rossington, Bobby Smith (yes, that one), Tom Courtney and Ian McShane.

Gordon Banks played against us once, for Chesterfield in 1959.
I wonder if those who were at the CG that day thought that the young keeper would one day be a WC winner.

A shame as well that a fair few of the WC winning team, for whatever reasons, had to sell their medals.

RIP.

Great goalkeeper and quite humble I believe. A bit of a hero of mine growing up.
I believe he also played at the CG for Fort Lauderdale something in a pre season friendly. I think after hed had an eye removed following a car accident. Could be wrong.

He did play for Fort Lauderdale Strikers in 78 and you are right, now you mention it, in 1977 pre season we stuffed them 6-3. I had forgotten that totally.

And yes he did lose an eye back in 72 in a car crash which was why he stopped playing professionally in England.

It was reported on the radio that Richard 'Dick' Churchill, the last great escapee, has died aged 99. But I can't find online confirmation.

He was caught after 2 days, but believes he survived the German massacre of the recaptured because of his surname. The Germans hoped he was related/could at least be used for propaganda later.
