Scottish football manager John Lambie died today.

His ‘famous’ tale was that during a match, striker Colin McGlashan was involved in a clash of heads with an opponent. On being told that McGlashan was concussed and didn’t know who he was, John Lambie replied: “Great. Tell him he’s Pelé and get him back on.”

Colin Bland.

Oldies will remember him for being an outstanding cover fielder in days when cricketers weren't a great deal more athletic than darts players.  He also managed to average near 50 with the bat in Tests for South Africa.

His test career was sadly restricted by apartheid-inspired boycotts (however justified) and also by injury.  It was most definitely an inspiration to the idea that fielding was not just something to be endured while you waited a turn with bat or ball.

I remember him from the 1965 SA tour of England... little did I think at the time we wouldn't see any Saffer Tests for years.

Saffers had the Pollock bros, Eddie Barlow and Dr Ali Bacher who did so much to get their cricket re-instated.

The whole series played out to a soundtrack of Barry Maguire's "Eve of Destruction"

Which has no relevance 53 years later... Sad
