Cue outpouring of grief on social media, led and driven in the most part by those who never listened to a David Bowie track but feel they need to be seen to be sad.....

Be interested to meet anyone over 30 who's never listened to David Bowie song. What an odd thing to focus on.

The bloke was a genius.

My brother definitely doesn't listen to David Bowie and he's hopped on to the grief bus to seem knowledgable. That's his prerogative.

I love a lot of David Bowie's music, that won't change. I also like how he clearly had a sense of humour with his cameos in stuff like Zoolander and Extras.

The last time he truly impressed me was during the Olympics closing ceremony when everyone thought he'd come out and sing Heroes... Nope. Kept his artistic integrity til the end.

I put Bowie on in the office today and most hadn't heard of him.

So I resigned.

I don't profess to have enjoyed all his music but he did produce some iconic stuff. I remember seeing the Ashes to Ashes video on Totp when it was released, I watched it in awe. Bowie dressed in that clown outfit.

I first saw Bowie in about 71, I was part of the Ents Committee at Uni, and we had  about a grand to spend and a certain number of shows to put on. Another kiddy and I could remember Space Oddity which had come out in 69, and Bowie had fallen off the radar somewhat, so we thought he'd be a good value headline for £250....we opened the gig with a then little known band for £30....called Roxy Music. It was maybe later in the year that he released Ziggy Stardust, and the rest is history.

I loved the 70's output, but more or less lost interest around the end of the decade....

I largely associate Bowie with my crush on Jennifer Connelly, which I still maintain to this day.

My father-in-law saw Bowie play Bristol in 1972 with support from Suzi Quattro and Thin Lizzy.

It was the Ziggy Stardust Tour but pre-TOTP. He bought his ticket on the day and was moved to the front as the venue was half empty. A year later and there are queues around the block for his return (which he also went to).

That man has some great gig tales and I'm envious.

Pretty unfair really. Most people can only vaguely sing along to one motorhead song, but even my 14 year old daughter can sing along to about a dozen Bowie ones. I'd guess that would be pretty much across the board with him. So yeah lots of people will be upset.

She came home yesterday and said quite a few in her year were asking who he was, she responded by asking them if they were morons whose parents hadn't bought them up right. That's my girl Smiley

I think Bowie is or may come to be regarded as a great artist rather than rock star.  Time will tell.

Male model, performance artist, actor, director, story teller, musical performer, enigmatic thinker.

As a teenager, I wasn't especially comfortable with glam rock, let alone sexual ambiguity.  I was forever grateful that the "All the young dudes" song Bowie  donated to Mott the Hoople saved that loveable but chaotic rock band from immediate extinction.

A mere footnote to Bowie's career but even so a big deal to all Mott fans and just one sign of Bowie's eclecticism and generosity.

Bunked off school to see David Bowie at Salisbury City hall in 1973 which was my first real gig. Was already hooked by The man who sold the world and my love of his music never diminished. Sad day

My first concert too. Been a huge fan ever since. Was at Berln at the weekend in Hansa Studios celebrating his birthday and album release and then the awful news Monday.
