Justin Wilson, British ex-F1 driver who's been racing in Indycar in America for a number of years, has passed away after being struck on the helmet by the loose nosecone of another car that'd crashed ahead of him. Horrible accident, the absolute worst of luck and he's paid the ultimate price. A truly sad day for motorsport. I remember Massa getting hit by a suspension coil and the effects that had on him, a nosecone is a lot bigger and heavier. RIP.

I don't know anything about racing cars. Is there a reason some of them don't have Perspex canopies? That would have stopped that accident surely?

There's been discussion about this for quite some time, there's benefits for sure, but also massive problems, such as if a car ends up on its roof and it's on fire, how does the driver get out? Motorsport is incredibly dangerous, but Indycar seems especially so of late. Dan Wheldon, another Brit, was the last Indycar driver to die in 2011, but so many more have been injured since then. This year's indy 500 race saw a number of accidents in practise, 3 cars flipped and one driver was impaled by one of his cars suspension arms after it entered the cockpit. 200mph when you're 15 feet from a concrete barrier will always be dangerous.

Indycar seems especially so of late

Indycar has always been the most dangerous *sic, quad wheeled motorsport.  Their attention to downforce and it's behaviours is poor. Trouble with Indy is that its designed so cars virtually stay in a slip-stream all the way round. If that position is held the vehicle is in near auto pilot. However when a takeover is engineered they're receiving incredible amount of G-Force the moment they take that option. How many times have you seen an Indy car flip trying to take over? They get into constant top speeds with the ovular notion of the circuits. This becomes dangerous as the brakes are only every seen as an emergency device. It's about time Indy focused on its regulations (even if it means lowering and limiting the top speeds). F1 isn't perfect but it has moved miles ahead since the late 80's/early 90's. Still as in all motorsport, every driver knows that when they enter the circuit there is potential for death.

RIP to them all.
