My brothers 360 has died, its not that ring of death thing it's "To play this disc, please put it in an xbox 360 console". After searching on google i think its possibly a dead dvd drive. He's had it since they first came out so i dont think i can send it back to anyone.

So... I was debating with myself as to whether to buy my son one for xmas anyway, but dont want him to have too many consoles in one house so im thinking i will just replace my brothers (my son plays on it more than him).

Do i buy a brand new one or can i get an arcade one £50 cheaper and put the hard drive from the old one into it?

Someone at work says i can do the above but i dont really understand it and my brother is useless....

If it's just the DVD drive then you can buy a second hand one on eBay. They're pretty simple to replace, if the machines old as you say then there's no worry about voiding the warranty by opening it up.

If you can get the exact same model of xbox DVD drive then you can swap them over, but you will need to take the circuit board off the dodgy drive and put it on the new drive as each drive has a unique key tied to each xbox. If you can't find an exact replacement then you would have to bugger about with getting it flashed/modded to accept another drive

Or you can just buy the arcade pack and stick the hard drive from the old one in it, jobs a good un!

I think i'll give the DVD drive thing a miss then!  Huh?

Is the hard drive pretty simple to get in and out?

Cheers guys, im gonna try it Sunday.

Whilst im here though... the live thing... My brother has a profile and so does Gianluca on the same machine. I have just set one of them up on a free months trial and then he will pay whatever it is a year. But do i have to pay a second time for them to use thier own tags or can i just have one subscription?

The wii is soooo much easier than this bloody thing!

It's only 3 years for the "red ring of death" fault that seems to happen to everyone! Otherwise it's just one year. I'm already on my 7th 360 after the previous 6 died (under warranty thank fuck)!
