Even if the snail could hear, would you think it could understand English?

Actually, for all we know, the shouting may have simply pushed the snail into panic mode, he/she froze and pissed himself all over your herbs.  Next time I'd suggest a quiet word in his shell like.

stand on it and then apologies for standing on it

Snails can't hear though Dave, so it won't hear the apology, although maybe you could offer a written apology as they can see. Or maybe a nice gift, if somebody stood on me then offered a pint of Guinness as an apology then I think I'd accept.

would it have to be a scaled gift tho, as snails are quite small and i'm sure a full-sized pint of guiness wouldnt be too healthy for them...

it'd be like a giant standing on you and offering you a glass of guiness the size of the murray john tower...

I would also like a giant offering me a John Murray tower sized guinness. I hope that he doesn't stand on me too hard though.

But yeah I think that maybe it should be scaled down for the snail, as it may fall in and drown in the black stuff.

I have the snails best interested at heart though, if I was too fall into a giant guinness then I could tread water until help arrived.

But a snail cant tread water as it has no legs, and even if it could swim how could it call for help?

Poor snails.
