mmmm lardy.

Apparently you can still find bijou bakers in places like Castle Coombe, which sell lardy.....but I remember a confection with enough grease to lube the pistons of a small steam loco.

Suppose in this health conscious age you can't get away with it anymore.

The bakers in Wootton Bassett still does Lardy, awesome stuff!

Love Lardy, can remember Borthwicks,it used to smell, also a bad smell when everyone would say Coopers, think it was a slaughter house.

The stink was definitely Cooper's blood and bone plant....OK it stank, but it was a green industry recycling like the metal plant.  The stink although foul was at least organic and harmless.

My father had a mate who worked in Borthwicks,  I did sciences at A level so needed a lab coat,  and got a fine white specimen from Borthwicks.  I always thought white might not  be the best of colours in a slaughterhouse.

There used to be an abattoir half way up Drove Road, near the Grove.

I recall Notton's Cafe in County Road much better than the Town Centre variant....which I recall best as Long John's Pancake Kitchen.  Which I guess was an effort at a sort of crepery in Swindonia....it was never going to last  Smiley
