Breaking News -

From STFC OS -

"Robbie Wellens reports he is scrapping his current transfer policy and following the Phil Brown model of signing a players utilised in one position. That season it was central midfielders but he has highlighted, for 2019/20 the importance of having experienced players, especially at RB.

Tomorrow we will be announcing the new starting XI including 20 new (some familiar faces) signings. STFC 0fficial can confirm they will be;

Paul Caddis (GK)

Miguel Commingues (RB)
Jack Smith (LB)
Kevin Amankwaah (CB)
Rod Thomas (CB)

Paul Allen (RM)
Nathan Byrne (CM)
Scott Cuthbert (CM)
Billy LLoyd (LM)

Nathan Thompson (FW)
Will Henry (ST)

RW reiterated the importance to go slightly against the grain of an all RB starting XI; he has drafted in Will Henry as his no.9 but states he won't be relying on Henry to score 20 goals. 'Will needs to be given a chance - in any position but as no.9 I see him flourishing. I've set him a target of five goals. Along with three other players.'

My only question on this is, who the fuck is Robbie Wellens..

He's our new, RB wielding manager of course. I only deal in facts  Pint

This is about the perceived strategy of Wellens, prioritising his budget not on a RB but presumably up front.  As pointed out the evidence shows this is risky, if you're serious about auto or even going up through PO's.... there is no example of an elevation with such a rookie RB as Tyler Reid in place, that's based on the 9 promotions I have seen.

One of the counter arguments is the contradiction inherent, in my wanting to give Henry a chance at the start of the season, yet the evidence is that in 4 of the 9 promotions the keeper either had no previous league experience (2 instances) or 5 and 7 league games.

I'm not advocating sticking with Henry if he shows he's not up to it, just he should be given the chance.
No manager is going to have a recruitment policy or select a side based on this kind of 'evidence'. And just because something has not happened before it doesn't mean it can't happen in the future.

I freely admit I'm not the brightest but LM starts because he's the better 'keeper. If he's injured or has a couple of dodgy perfomances, Henry takes his place. Surely?

We've been 'close' for weeks. Does feel like it wont happen. There will be other targets I'm sure.

Must be something in it for Wellens to still be pursuing it if the Knoyle and Conroy situations are anything to go by.

Important signing, show of intent for other potential targets.

May seemingly took a while to get over the line too.  We'll see  Shrug

Cant see it myself, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Especially after Ryan Lowe miraculously bumped into Devitt in the Trafford Centre on sunday according to the Plymouth sports reporter

Mayor seems done and dusted, I recon Devitt could easily go to them they will be the big spenders on the squad in this division alongside Salford.

This for me too.

We know that Plymouth are interested, so it's only to be expected that Devitt will go for a chat. That doesn't mean he's signing for them, though.

Devitt will be pushing it a bit if he leaves it too long, though. His first choices will likely have other targets as well. I expect the likes of Wellens would rather sign their 2nd choice rather than 3rd, 4th, whatever choice.

They have the financial clout to gazump anyone in this league and the one above I would think.

They will find ways around the FFP as FGR have done with sponsorship deals etc.

I shouldn’t get to bitter over it, on recent form we’d get gazumped by Supermarine if the situation arose.
